Monday Musings… on a Monday this time

I got to see my parents AND my sister and brother-in-law this weekend and it was awesome. It was only for 24 hours, but we packed in everything we could. Lots of canoe trips and talking and gin and tonics. My perfect weekend. And for your viewing pleasure, here is an amazing video of Rigsbee on one of our canoe rides when he met a herd of cows. Unfortunately, Lillie stopped recording right before Rigs took a flying leap off that little ridge to jump back into the river. The 2 separate 1+ hour canoe trips were his first where he was swimming the whole time (with his shark life jacket), and he absolutely loved it. He looked ridiculous, but he had a blast.

I am back home and back to the reality of all the work we’ve got ahead of us.

GULP.

Our goal is to get the house listed for sale by August 2nd (when we leave for the beach) so that our realtor can show the house while we’re gone. That means we have a ton of work to do in the next 6 weeks. And the last week or 2 is going to have to include painting and floor refinishing, so we’re really talking about 4-5 weeks.

We have to replace 5 windows and those have been ordered. I’ve also ordered all of the flooring materials for the downstairs bathroom, and they should be here on Wednesday. We ordered 3 boxes of luxury vinyl tile in Harvested Marble and I think it’s going to look really good in there once it’s been painted the light gray color we’re going to paint most of the interior. [Side note - apparently some people like most of their house to be one color or similar colors, unlike us who, as my brother has said, likes to paint each room a different color.]. And those of you who offered to help paint on my post last week, I have written your names down. No take-backs.

I’ve also ordered grout renew to freshen the grout in the showers that is looking kind of dingy. We’ve received the grout and grout saw to start pulling out the broken grout and replacing it. I was hoping to start that today, but canoeing is exhausting and I was tired.

The foundation work is supposed to be done tomorrow. Our contractor emailed me last week and said there were just a few odds and ends to finish up (like reinstalling the stairs…) and they should just have 1 day of work left. I think it might take longer than that, but what the hell do I know? I don’t mean to sound irritated - we love our contractor and have been incredibly happy with him and his team of workers. They’ve done an amazing job the past 8 weeks.

So our next few weeks are just going to be lots and lots of work, but we’re ready. And dare I say excited?

Currently:

Listening to - Floodlines, a podcast from The Atlantic about Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the levees and the resulting aftermath. It’s incredibly enlightening and horrifying.

Loving - Marco Polo, the phone app that lets you record videos and send them instantly to whoever you choose that’s also on the app. I have several groups of friends and we send videos back and forth. It has been so amazing to keep in touch during this time when we haven’t been able to get together regularly.

Nervous about - I have to work 3 days this week. 3 whole days! The following week we work 4 days (because of the July 4th holiday) and after that we’re back full time. I’m REALLY happy to be going back to work, but man, I’m exhausted just thinking about it. I mentioned it to Chris and he did not feel sorry for me.

In my spare time I’m - officially job searching in Hawaii. I’ve never searched for a professional job before, so I have no idea what I’m doing. Suggestions welcome. I’m using Daybook and Indeed, so far. All I know right now is that I’m not planning on taking the Bar immediately (sorry, Mom) and that I want some sort of legal/policy/public interest work. Being that wide open is making it a little tougher to search and wade through everything. Guess I also need to get my resume up to date.
